What Is Microneedling?
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT), is a treatment that creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries in the skin using sterile, fine needles. These micro-channels trigger the body's natural wound-healing cascade, stimulating new collagen and elastin production. The result is smoother, firmer skin with improved texture, tone, and clarity over a series of sessions.
At Allen Medical Aesthetics, we enhance our microneedling facial treatments with PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) and PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) to accelerate healing and amplify results. PRF is derived from your own blood and delivers concentrated growth factors directly into the micro-channels created during treatment. Unlike PRP (platelet-rich plasma), PRF uses a fibrin matrix that releases growth factors slowly over 10 to 14 days, providing sustained stimulation. PDRN, a salmon-derived DNA fragment, promotes tissue repair and regeneration at the cellular level.

How Microneedling with PRF Works
Your microneedling session at Allen Medical Aesthetics takes approximately 45 to 60 minutes, including numbing time. Each treatment is customized based on your specific skin concerns and goals.
Microneedling with PRF is one of my favorite treatments to pair with a consistent skincare routine. The controlled micro-injuries trigger your body's healing response, and when we add PRF, we are supercharging that repair process with your own growth factors.
Consultation and skin assessment
Your provider evaluates your skin, discusses your concerns, and recommends a treatment plan. We determine whether PRF, PDRN, or both are appropriate enhancements for your session.
Blood draw for PRF (if applicable)
If PRF enhancement is part of your treatment plan, a small blood sample is drawn and processed in a centrifuge to isolate your platelet-rich fibrin. This takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Numbing
A topical numbing cream is applied to the treatment area for 20 to 30 minutes to ensure comfort throughout the procedure.
Microneedling treatment
The microneedling device creates controlled micro-channels across the treatment area. Your provider adjusts needle depth based on the zone of the face and the concern being addressed.
PRF and PDRN application
PRF is applied topically or injected into the micro-channels immediately after needling. PDRN serum is layered on to promote cellular repair. The open micro-channels allow these active ingredients to penetrate deeper than topical application alone.
Post-treatment care
A calming serum or mask is applied to soothe the skin. You receive detailed aftercare instructions covering skincare, sun protection, and activity restrictions for the first 48 hours.

Microneedling Aftercare and Recovery
Microneedling aftercare is straightforward. Immediately after treatment, your skin will be red and feel warm, similar to a mild sunburn. This redness typically resolves within 24 to 48 hours. Some patients experience mild peeling or flaking on days two through four as the skin turns over.
You can return to most normal activities within 24 to 48 hours. Makeup may be applied after 24 hours. Avoid direct sun exposure and active skincare ingredients including retinol, AHAs, and BHAs for five to seven days after treatment.
Results develop progressively. You may notice an initial glow within one to two weeks, with continued improvement over four to six weeks as new collagen forms beneath the surface. For optimal results, we recommend a series of three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every three to six months.
Redness and warmth similar to a sunburn. Skin may feel tight. Avoid makeup, active skincare, and sun exposure.
Redness fades. Mild peeling or flaking may occur as the skin renews. Keep the skin hydrated with gentle, approved products.
Initial glow and smoother texture become noticeable. Skin feels refreshed and more even.
New collagen production produces visible improvement in firmness, fine lines, and scarring.
Full results from the session are apparent. Continued collagen remodeling refines texture and tone. Schedule your next session to build on these results.
Common Questions About Microneedling
What is the recovery time for microneedling?
Expect redness and warmth similar to a sunburn for 24 to 48 hours after treatment. Mild peeling or flaking may occur on days two through four. Most patients return to normal activities within one to two days. Makeup can be applied after 24 hours. Avoid direct sun exposure and active skincare ingredients like retinol, AHAs, and BHAs for five to seven days.
What is the difference between microneedling and RF microneedling?
Standard microneedling uses fine needles alone to create controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen. RF microneedling adds radiofrequency energy delivered through the needles, heating deeper tissue layers for more robust remodeling and skin tightening. We offer both treatments at Allen Medical Aesthetics and recommend the right option based on your skin concerns. RF microneedling is the better choice for deeper scarring and skin laxity, while standard microneedling excels for surface-level texture and tone.
How often should I get microneedling?
For an initial treatment series, sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart, with three to six sessions total depending on your concerns. After completing the series, maintenance treatments every three to six months help sustain results. Your provider will build a treatment plan based on your goals and the severity of your concerns.
Does microneedling help with acne scars?
Microneedling for acne scars is effective, particularly for rolling and boxcar scar types. The collagen remodeling process helps fill in and smooth depressed scars over a series of treatments. Deep ice pick scars may respond better to more aggressive treatments like CO2 laser resurfacing. During your consultation, we assess your scarring and recommend the most effective approach.
What is PRF microneedling?
PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) is the next generation of PRP. It is derived from your own blood and contains concentrated growth factors held in a natural fibrin matrix. When applied during microneedling, PRF delivers these growth factors directly into the micro-channels created by the needles, enhancing collagen production and supporting faster recovery. PRF releases growth factors slowly over 10 to 14 days, providing sustained stimulation that PRP cannot match.
How many microneedling sessions do I need to see improvement in acne scars?
Most patients with acne scarring see noticeable improvement after three to six sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Mild scarring may respond in fewer sessions, while deeper ice pick or boxcar scars may require additional treatments or combination therapy with CO2 laser resurfacing. Your provider will assess your scar type and depth during your consultation and recommend a realistic treatment plan.
What is the downtime after microneedling, and when can I wear makeup?
Expect redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24 to 72 hours after treatment. Most patients can return to work the next day. We recommend waiting at least 24 hours before applying makeup and avoiding active skincare ingredients (retinol, vitamin C, AHAs) for 48 to 72 hours. Sun protection is essential during the healing period. Your provider will give you specific aftercare instructions based on the depth of your treatment.
Can I combine microneedling with PRF or other serums for better results?
Yes. Combining microneedling with PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) or PDRN (polydeoxyribonucleotide) enhances results by delivering growth factors and regenerative compounds directly into the micro-channels created during treatment. PRF is derived from your own blood, while PDRN is a salmon-derived DNA fragment that supports tissue repair. Both options accelerate collagen production and improve healing compared to microneedling alone.
